Curriculum and Topics

As a playgroup we try to make the curriculum as stimulating as possible. We follow the Early Years Foundation Stage,(EYFS), document that runs from birth to the end of the reception year at school. We plan activities so that the six areas of learning are covered in a fun and exciting way.

In addition to the EYFS we have a two year topic rota. We use this to engage the children and focus their learning. The topics have been planned to cover a wide variety of learning, from numbers, nature and literacy to music and the local community and people around them. This includes celebrating festivals and celebrations from around the world. We have Chinese New Year week and India and Diwali week each year. Here children get to sample foods, music, stories, dance and clothing from different cultures. We also celebrate special days that are closer to home, Christmas, Easter, St Patrick’s Day, pancake day to name a few. In addition we try to make the experience of playgroup exciting by inviting parents and visitors to contribute to the group and share their experience and talents.

We have a local football coach for one session per term, we have had French lessons, visits from dentists, animals in from home, demonstrations from local brass bands. If the children are enjoying themselves we believe they will learn more and be inspired to become more involved and active learners.
